Controlling many-body quantum systems (2009-2017)

Summary

In this project, we propose to investigate the interaction between ultracold ions and neutral atoms in traps. The guiding concept is to exploit the available control of the geometry and strength of trapping potentials and of external fields in order to generate interesting forms of interaction that lead to a time dependent tuning of quantum correlations in combined systems of ions and atoms. This objective is connected to the common goal of the SFB and it follows its general approach of starting with well controlled few-body systems that can be still theoretically treated, in order to proceed toward the understanding of largerscale many-body quantum systems.

When a neutral atom and an ion are brought together, the ion charge induces in the atom an electric dipole moment, which attracts it with an internal-state-independent r-4 dependence at large distances. The short-range part of the interaction potential, conversely, presents an intricate dependence on the diatomic molecular state, exhibiting many features known from atomic collision physics, for instance Feshbach resonances. In confined geometries, the bigger interaction strength of the induced-dipole potential, compared to neutral collisions, gives rise to novel phenomena like trap-induced resonances.

We plan to investigate ion-atom interactions over a broad range of distances, in order to achieve control over their quantum states and to engineer and investigate interesting quantum correlations in experimentally realizable systems involving from a few up to many such particles. Analogies to collective effects appearing in condensed-matter systems will be explored, for instance concerning effective ion-mediated interactions between atoms.

A further important application of this work will be to interactions between ions and neutral molecules, whereby the asymptotic part of the potential shows the same r-dependence as with atoms. In the context of a molecular ensemble coupled to individually trapped ions, this will be used to develop methods to effect cooling of the vibrational degrees of freedom of molecular gases and self-assembled crystals, which is difficult to attain via other means.
